BBA Star Goldie Dies on Vals Day

Goldie: How she died – Kenny Ogungbe

Susan Harvey
By Charles Mgbolu
CEO of Kennis Music, the label Goldie was signed on, Kenny Ogungbe has issued a statement detailing the final hours of the late singer.
“With a deep sense of loss, we announce the shocking death of our darling music star, Goldie Harvey. Goldie, 31, died on Thursday after she complained of a severe headache shortly after her arrival from the United States where she went to witness the Grammy Award. She was rushed from her Park View, Ikoyi, Lagos residence to her official hospital, Reddington, Victoria Island, Lagos, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival at exactly 7:30pm in the evening.
We consider this period a gloomy moment for us and the entire Nigerian music industry in view of the circumstance in which she passed away; the abundance of talent she exhibited in her short but eventful music career and the various opportunities her trip to the United States of America would have availed her.
She is survived by her father, step- mother, brothers and sisters. We deeply sympathise with her family and fans all over the world and very grateful to all and sundry, especially, the vibrant Nigerian media for their concern and prompt reportage. We shall keep everybody informed as events unfold as we are devastated by the sudden loss.”
Goldie’s remains has been deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital LASUTH mortuary.

Guardiola To Face Barcelona

Guardiola To Face Barcelona

Bayern will host Barca at the Allianz Arena on July 24, a little over three weeks after Guardiola is due to take over from Jupp Heynckes as Bayern coach.
photo
The deal between the two clubs was finalised during the general assembly of the European Club Association in Doha.
The match will be named the Uli Hoeness Cup after the Bayern president, with all proceeds donated to charity.
"I am really looking forward to this game," Hoeness said on the Bayern website.
"I thank the board for this gift on my 60th birthday. I am particularly pleased about the fact that I can use the proceeds to support social causes."
Guardiola starred as a player and coach for Barcelona.
He was part of the side that won the European Cup in 1992 while also collecting six La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys, four Supercopas, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and two UEFA Super Cups.
As coach, he helped build a side widely regarded as the best in the world, winning two Champions League crowns, three straight La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys, three Supercopas, two UEFA Super Cups and two FIFA Club World Cup titles between 2008 and 2012.
Guardiola stepped down as Barca coach at the end of last season to take a sabbatical, before last month announcing he would take over at Bayern once Heynckes retires in the summer.

100th Birthday of Rosa Parks, the Civil Rights Icon

100th Birthday of Rosa Parks, the Civil Rights Icon

Civil rights icon Rosa Parks would have been 100 Feb. 4, 2013.
Rosa Parks is fingerprinted by police in Montgomery, Ala., Feb. 22, 1956, two months after refusing to give up her seat on a bus for a white passenger on Dec. 1, 1955. She was arrested with several others who violated segregation laws.
Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an African-American civil rights activist, whom the U.S. Congress called "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement".
On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks refused to obey bus driver's order that she give up her seat in the colored section to a white passenger, after the white section was filled.
Parks' act of defiance and the Montgomery Bus Boycott became important symbols of the modern Civil Rights Movement.
She became an international icon of resistance to racial segregation.
She organized and collaborated with civil rights leaders, including Edgar Nixon and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a new minister in town who gained national prominence in the civil rights movement.
Although widely honored in later years, she also suffered for her act; she was fired from her job as a seamstress in a local department store.
From 1965 to 1988 she served as secretary and receptionist to John Conyers, an African-American U.S. Representative.
After retirement, Parks wrote her autobiography, and lived a largely private life in Detroit.
Parks received national recognition and a posthumous statue in the United States Capitol's National Statuary Hall. Upon her death in 2005, she was the first woman and second non-U.S. government official to lie in honor at the Capitol Rotunda.
Below are the curious facts about the life of this hero of a woman.
  • Parks had been thrown off the bus a decade earlier by the same bus driver -- for refusing to pay in the front and go around to the back to board. She had avoided that driver's bus for twelve years because she knew well the risks of angering drivers, all of whom were white and carried guns. Her own mother had been threatened with physical violence by a bus driver, in front of Parks who was a child at the time. Parks' neighbor had been killed for his bus stand, and teenage protester Claudette Colvin, among others, had recently been badly manhandled by the police.
  • Parks was a lifelong believer in self-defense. Malcolm X was her personal hero. Her family kept a gun in the house, including during the boycott, because of the daily terror of white violence. As a child, when pushed by a white boy, she pushed back. His mother threatened to kill her, but Parks stood her ground. Another time, she held a brick up to a white bully, daring him to follow through on his threat to hit her. He went away. When the Klu Klux Klan went on rampages through her childhood town, Pine Level, Ala., her grandfather would sit on the porch all night with his rifle. Rosa stayed awake some nights, keeping vigil with him.
  • Her husband was her political partner. Parks said Raymond was "the first real activist I ever met." Initially she wasn't romantically interested because Raymond was more light-skinned than she preferred, but she became impressed with his boldness and "that he refused to be intimidated by white people." At Raymond's urging, Parks, who had to drop out in the eleventh grade to care for her sick grandmother, returned to high school and got her diploma. Raymond's input was crucial to Parks' political development and their partnership sustained her political work over many decades.
  • Many of Parks' ancestors were Indians. She noted this to a friend who was surprised when in private Parks removed her hairpins and revealed thick braids of wavy hair that fell below her waist. Her husband, she said, liked her hair long and she kept it that way for many years after his death, although she never wore it down in public. Aware of the racial politics of hair and appearance, she tucked it away in a series of braids and buns -- maintaining a clear division between her public presentation and private person.
  • Parks' arrest had grave consequences for her family's health and economic well-being. After her arrest, Parks was continually threatened, such that her mother talked for hours on the phone to keep the line busy from constant death threats. Parks and her husband lost their jobs after her stand and didn't find full employment for nearly ten years. Even as she made fundraising appearances across the country, Parks and her family were at times nearly destitute. She developed painful stomach ulcers and a heart condition, and suffered from chronic insomnia. Raymond, unnerved by the relentless harassment and death threats, began drinking heavily and suffered two nervous breakdowns. The black press, culminating in JET magazine's July 1960 story on "the bus boycott's forgotten woman," exposed the depth of Parks' financial need, leading civil rights groups to finally provide some assistance.
  • Parks was an internationalist. She was an early opponent of the Vietnam War in the early 1960s, a member of The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and a supporter of the Winter Soldier hearings in Detroit and the Jeannette Rankin Brigade protest in D.C. In the 1980s, she protested apartheid and U.S. complicity, joining a picket outside the South African embassy and opposed U.S. policy in Central America. Eight days after 9/11, she joined other activists in a letter calling on the United States to work with the international community and no retaliation or war.
  • Parks was a lifelong activist and a hero to many, including Nelson Mandela. After his release from prison, he told her, "You sustained me while I was in prison all those years."
Civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks receives a round of applause from fellow civil rights leaders and supporters as she walks across the stage at a gathering in front of Montgomery's State Capital, at the end of the Selma to Montgomery march, late March 1965.
Civil rights leader Rosa Parks smiles while people gathered around her applaud at a ceremony held in her honor at the House of the Lord Church, Brooklyn, N.Y., Jan. 22, 1988.
Rosa Parks and Hillary Clinton at the White House in Washington in 1990.
Eighty-five-year-old civil rights activist Rosa Parks, right, presents a copy of her book "Quiet Strength" to Pope John Paul II after a prayer service in the Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis, Jan. 27, 1999.
Civil rights icon Rosa Parks waves to the audience before receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor at a ceremony, Nov. 28, 1999, in Detroit. The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest honor that the U.S. government con bestow to an individual.

Meet America's Longest Married Couple

Meet America's Longest Married Couple

John and Ann Betar weren't supposed to get married. Her father had arranged for her to wed another man, but she and John fled Bridgeport and eloped in New York. That was more than 80 years ago.
photo - PHOTO: Meet America's Longest Married Couple
The couple is still happily hitched, a fact that has led to their naming as the "longest married couple" in the U.S. for 2013 by Worldwide Marriage Encounter, a Christian marriage group based in San Bernardino, Calif.
The Betars are scheduled to receive a plaque and other gifts from the group at their granddaughter's home in Fairfield on Saturday.
They told the New York Daily News that there are no secrets to a long marriage, only a few simple rules.
"We just live with contentment and we don't live beyond our means," John Betar said. "Just go with the flow."
John's now 101 years old and Ann is 97, and they're still living in their home along the Fairfield shore. They had five children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Two of their children died in their 60s.
Ron and Judy Pekny of Worldwide Marriage Encounter say the title of "longest married couple" is based on nominations the group received, so there may be some couples who have been married longer.
John and Ann grew up across the street from each other in Bridgeport, and John used to drive Ann to high school in his Ford Roadster. They fell in love. When her father arranged for her to marry someone else, they eloped in Harrison, N.Y, about 25 miles north of New York City.
John went on to open a grocery store in Bridgeport.
Ann Betar told the Hearst Connecticut Media Group around their 80th anniversary in November that family has been a key to their longevity.
"That's what makes life what it is," she said. "We were fortunate enough to live long enough to see this ... and it's really one of the most gratifying things in the world to see your great-grandchildren, to see your grandchildren become adults."
John Betar added, "That's what keeps us alive. We live for them."

From Myths to Facts: the Whole Truth About Yogurt

From Myths to Facts:

the Whole Truth About Yogurt

by

Hello,

Rich in calcium

The BIO white yogurt has high calcium content with guaranteed sustainable absorption. For example, one cup of BIO yogurt provides the nutrients our body needs to build, maintain and strengthen the bones.

Moreover, studies show that eating at least three low-fat dairy products per day may reduce the risk of bone disease and fractures. White low-fat yogurt can definitely be one of these products consumed on a daily basis.

Health overflowing with proteins

One cup of yogurt contains between 5-9 grams of complete protein that provides our body with all the necessary amino acids. Our body produces most amino acids except for nine that must be obtained from the food we eat. A complete protein contains all the essential amino acids.

Good for the figure as well

A significant benefit of yogurt lies in the fact that it contains very small amounts of fat on the one hand, and protein that contributes to a sense of satiety on the other hand. Yogurt is clearly a healthy, tasty and non-fattening food that still creates a sense of satiety, so that even those who watch their weight can enjoy it.

Eating yogurt daily will provide our body with various important nutrients, including a variety of essential vitamins and minerals.

Natural reinforcement when taking antibiotics

When we are treated with antibiotics, good bacteria that safeguard our body are damaged. Eating yogurt is one of the best and healthiest ways to restore the damaged bacterial population in our body and thus strengthen our immune system.

Yogurt contains Bifidos and Acidophilus bacteria. These bacteria reach our intestines where they stay and multiply. When these bacteria reach the desired quantity, they improve our health, help us digest food and assist the absorption of vitamins and minerals in our body.

Lactose intolerant? We have a surprise for you

The lack of lactase (an enzyme that breaks lactose, milk sugar) varies from one person to another. Therefore, one of the recommendations for lactose-intolerant people is to choose dairy products that contain less lactose. For example, yogurt, low-lactose milk, cottage, hard cheese and ripened cheese. Since the bacteria in yogurt break down the lactose, some people can enjoy this healthy gift to the body – yogurt.

Digestive system friendly

Most of the foods we consume contain bacteria, viruses and toxins. But not to worry: our digestive system protects the body and prevents bacteria from entering the bloodstream.

The use of antibiotics, treatment in various medications, hormonal changes, mental stress and western dietary habits – all may potentially damage the good bacteria population and thus break its ecological balance. This is where yoghurt enters the picture- one cup of yogurt keeps the balance of friendly bacteria in the body and encourages their growth.

I Hope you now feel slightly more informed about the wonderful world of yogurt and its health benefits. In the next post, we will go back to the history of this product, which made its way from the cow udders to neatly-stocked cups on supermarket shelves.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Olive Oil

Everything You Wanted to Know About Olive Oil and Never Dared to Ask

Hello,

My name is Inbal Young, Olive Oil Brand Manager at Yad Mordechai. In this post I put together the most interesting and frequently-asked questions about olive oil that you may have heard or even asked yourselves.

1. So…is it really good for us?

Yes. Olive oil possesses diverse proven medicinal properties, and it is an excellent source of monounsaturated fatty acids (which help eliminate bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol) . Surprisingly, olive oil is similar in its fatty acid composition to breast milk.

2. So how much should we consume?

The recommended daily consumption is 25 ml. The U.S. FDA recommends such daily consumption (3-4 tablespoons) to reduce the risk of heart disease.

3. Who are the largest olive oil consumers in the world?

The Spaniards and Italians consume over 10 liters per person a year, but the world record holders are, undoubtedly, the Greeks who consume more than 20 liters per person a year (two glasses per week!).

4. Where do all these olives come from?

More than 16 different varieties of olives for olive oil grow in Israel, from the Golan Heights to the Negev Highland. Most of the varieties originate from the Mediterranean basin and grew well in our country. The most common original variety in our region is the Syrian variety (which, despite its name, did not grow in Syria but mainly in Israel and Lebanon).

5. Do varieties and regions differ at all?

Of course! Olive oil is an entire world of aromas and flavors that result from the olive variety and its growth area. Flavor experts make a distinction between three major parameters in olive oil tasting:Fruitiness (the total aromas originating from the fruit), bitterness (a sense of taste on the tongue) and spiciness ) a sense of burn on the tongue).

6. What determines these taste and aroma characteristics?

First of all, the olive varieties that comprise them. But equally important are the growth area and agricultural growth. And finally, of course, the oil production process in the oil press and the storage conditions.

7. How do we ensure the wonderful flavors and aromas time and time again?

By using an optimal blend of dozens of varieties from various growth areas. Our team of tasters tastes and samples (and tastes again) dozens of oils, and typifies their sensory qualities. Only then do we decide which varieties and oils should “marry” in a way that will ensure the desired flavor and aroma.

8. What about a single-variety olive oil?

Just like other categories (wine, coffee, etc.), olive oils consists of two schools of thought: the single-variety notion (that promises one olive variety) and the blend notion (that promises a complete spectrum of
aromas and flavors blended together). At Yad Mordechai we chose the blend notion from the belief that this way nature can manifest its richness and might to perfection.

9. What makes a quality olive oil?

Extra virgin olive oil is oil produced in a cold press process, whose percentage of free fatty acids is less than 0.8%, and that no taste defects were found in it, as defined by the Global Olive Oil Standard (there is such a thing!). These and many other qualities are constantly monitored in our oil lab.

10. So now we can just use it, right?

Yes! Olive oil is the desired accompaniment for cold dishes, salads and various dressings and gravies. The recent trend calls for using olive oil in sweet dishes as well.

11. What about cooking and frying?

Contrary to common belief, extra virgin olive oil is resilient in short cooking and frying thanks to its unique composition, and is therefore preferable to other oils.Chefs and amateur cooks use olive oil for light and semi-deep (schnitzels) frying as well as for baking salty dishes.

I hope that you now feel (much) more informed about the wonderful world of olive oils. If you have any questions or facts you wish to share with me, please place a comment to this post and I will be happy to reply.

Parrot Robs Tourist

Parrot Robs Tourist of £600

Peter Leach, a former Royal Navy employee, was driving around the South Island of New Zealand in a campervan last week, when he stopped to take pictures of the scenery.

He pulled in at a rest area along State Highway 73 to take in the views at Arthur's Pass and, while there, took a picture of a kea (a species of parrot native to New Zealand) that had stopped nearby.
As he strolled around the area, the bird reportedly flew into the open windows of his campervan and lifted $1100 of the local currency from the dashboard inside. According to the Scottish Daily Record, Mr Leach was unaware of the theft until two fellow tourists pointed it out.
"A Canadian couple walked by and said, ‘We’ve just seen that bird take something out of your van.’," Mr Leach said.He said all that remained was the equivalent of £20 in his front pocket. He reported to incident to police, but the chances of retrieving the currency remain slim. "The officer was very serious for the first few questions," Mr Leach said.
"Then he said, ‘Do you mind if I just stop to laugh?’ I suppose I can’t blame him."Four years ago, another Scottish tourist in New Zealand had his passport stolen by a kea.
The birds are known for their intelligence, and have also been blamed for vandalising cars, including breaking off wing mirrors and stripping rubber from windscreens.
The zoologist Mark Cawardine describes them as “a devilish mountain parrot feared by hire car companies.” Mr Leach, however, remains determined to continue on his travels, with friends apparently loaning him money for the rest of the trip.

Crawling In Love: An Alternative to Falling

Crawling In Love: An Alternative to Falling

4 February, 2013
It’s a rush more exhilarating than skiing. It’s a slippery slope down which you’re liable to break hearts including your own. Falling in love is fun; falling in love is dangerous. When we fall in love we tend to move toward each other at an accelerating rate, gaining momentum in a surge to merge.
We attribute the gaining speed to the unique glory of our particular partner and partnership, but more than we tend to notice the acceleration simply comes with the terrain of love’s slippery slope. Love is a positive feedback loop. It snowballs, a function of five factors I’ll call the Five R’s:
  • The Rush: On dates with potentially compatible partners, the object is to give each other sweet rushes through thoughtful, attentive, kind and generous gestures.
  • The Risk: If the attraction is mutual, then so is the risk of rejection. Both parties will become sensitive to signs of withdrawal.
  • The Ratchet: Any rush-generating gesture will come to be expected, its withdrawal a potential sign of risk. If you texted a thank you thoughtfully after the first date, then not texting after the second might be taken as a sign that you’re withdrawing. It becomes as hard to lower expectations as it is to lower a ratcheting car jack.
  • The Rise: With every delightful gesture becoming an expected gesture, to engender further delight you need to ratchet up with evermore-generous gestures.
  • The Rest: You can’t keep adding generous gestures at an accelerating rate forever. To survive the rest of a long happy partnership, you have to give the ratchet a rest, de-escalating gestures. Successful couples de-escalate their generosity imperceptibly, as months or years into their relationship they get practical and come to take each other and the rarity of fresh new generous gestures for granted
Many couples don’t survive the transition from Rise to Rest. Some don’t because love’s slippery slope rushes them toward each other too quickly to notice their incompatibilities. Others don’t because they think that the de-escalation signals withdrawal, evidence that their love has died. Still others choose not to survive the transition because if the fun part is the Rush and Rise, what’s the point of sticking around for the Rest?
No matter what your goals, there’s benefit to thinking about the five R’s effects on your love’s prospects: If you seek a partner with whom to enjoy the rest of a long happy life, expect the eventual transition from Rise to Rest and be prepared to weather it. If you’re trying to slow things down so as to only partner with someone sustainably compatible, not just someone rush-and-rise-worthy, figure out how to crawl in love rather than fall in love. Slow down the delivery of generous gestures.
Resist the temptation to escalate generous gestures ASAP, with the all the expectations that follow. If you’re looking to just harvest rushes, manage the Five R’s carefully so as not to reap havoc with your dates. Find like-minded rush-harvesters as partners, and enjoy the square dance of romance honorably, honoring of the dates who come and go by being careful what you promise in those rushes of generosity.
And if, falling too fast, you keep getting heartbroken, understand that the cause of your problems isn’t necessarily in you or your pick of partners, but most fundamentally in the slippery slope of love itself with all its inherent rushes and risks.

Meeting your in-laws for the first time?

Meeting your in-laws for the first time?

Meeting your in-laws for the first time
Most people cringe at the thought of meeting the family of their partner. These tips can make it eaiser:
 Use make-up in moderation
If you are a woman, go easy on the make-up. Too much make-up can often give the impression that you are false. Go for the ‘every day, girl next door’ look.
 Dress appropriately
The first thing your future in-laws will see is how you are dressed, so dress well. This does not mean that you must wear your pinstripe suit. Unless you are meeting in a very formal setting, a smart casual outfit will do. For the women, this is not the time or setting to flaunt your legs or anything else you might like to flaunt.
Do not drink too much alcohol
According to www.wikihow.com, it is better to refrain from it altogether. If it is forced upon you, sip your drink slowly to deter a future top-up.
Do not be overly possessive with your partner around your in-laws
Hanging off them or kissing is annoying. It also makes the  statement. -he’s mine now.
 Pay compliments
Compliment the house, apartment or whatever it is, they live in. If the paint is peeling, the curtains are falling down, rats climbing out of bins, feign ignorance. This is a brief visit and you have to see it through for the one you love. This is not just about you.
 Don’t act offended
If you are insulted, put down, mocked or otherwise, smile and bite your tongue. Unless you can come back with a comment that is both witty and includes a hidden innuendo, then you are wasting your time being miffed. It will lead to an argument.
 Flatter your partner
Without going over the top, say nice things about your partner. Let your in-laws know that you love their son or daughter by telling a positive story. It should focus on a good attribute about your partner and how it affects you or others.
Keep your first meeting short and sweet
For most people, meeting anyone for the first time is uncomfortable. As a result, they usually are not themselves. Couple these feelings with the fear of offending someone who will be in your life over a long period, you are sure to compromise yourself. As a result, keep your first meeting brief.
 Address them appropriately
Before you start calling your in-laws ‘Mummy’ or ‘Daddy’ get their permission. This also applies to any first names or nicknames.
 Be at your best behaviour
Think of your first meeting as a job interview. Stay in the background and observe what happens and then offer to help out, (but be careful not to overdo it).
 Keep an open mind
Do not have assumptions or pre-conceived notions about your in-laws, as these will affect the way you view them from the outset. Just as you would want them to know you better and not have assumptions about you, the same case applies with you. Be open to their traditions as well and be willing to adopt them. This will help them accept you even more easily. Once they see that you are open to their way of thinking, they will automatically warm up to you. However, do not lose your individuality.

Farouk Lawan Spends His First Day In Kuje Prison

Farouk Lawan Spends His First Day In Prison

3 February, 2013
http://news.naij.com
Embattled member of the House of the Representatives, Hon. Farouk Lawan on Friday passed his first day in Kuje Maximum Prisons, Abuja, amid tight security provided by the military and mobile policemen.
His presence in the prison has also turned it to a beehive of activities as dignitaries, especially his associates thronged the prison yesterday to empathise with him.
A black jeep entering the premises of the Kuje prison signaled the arrival of an important personality. Little did the armed guards of the Nigeria Prisons Service know who was in the car… Until a man in white flowing gown appeared. Then they knew it was Farouk Lawan, the erstwhile chairman of the House of Representatives committee that probed the oil subsidy regime.
A Very Important Personality (VIP), Farouk Lawan was accompanied with a remand warrant ordering his detention in Kuje prison as an Awaiting Trial Man (ATM) with clear instruction that he should be produced before Justice Madashiru Oniyangi of Abuja High Court on February 8.
Lawan and the secretary of his committee, Boniface Emenalo, were charged for allegedly demanding and collecting bribe of $620,000 amounting to N97.4 million from a business mogul, Chief Femi Otedola, during the committee’s probe sittings.
Shortly after Lawan and Emenalo alighted from the vehicle, a prison officer collected the warrant from a plain-clothed security man who escorted the accused persons to the prison.
After reading through the warrant, he turned and knocked at the iron gate of the prison. Someone from inside peeped from a small opening and the guard outside asked him to open the gate. The officer on the other side opened the gate.
Farouk, who looked very sad was forcing a smile on his face and waved twice at the small crowd of prison officials who were standing outside and gazing at him. Lawan only stared into space and shook his head in disbelief. As he slowly walked into the prison, the guard and other non-armed security personnel on the entourage filed in behind him.
A prison official who played a vital role in processing the admission of Farouk Lawal into the prison disclosed that the procedures of Farouk and Boniface’s admission were carried out in the office of the officer-In-charge of the prison.
"Our O/C tried to calm them down, explaining to them that several prominent Nigerians had been remanded in that prison and were released. He was very optimistic that they would also regain their freedom ultimately.
"He pleaded with them to relax their minds and cooperate with the prison officials, assuring them that they would not regret their stay with us. They were not given any prison uniforms to wear. The Awaiting Trial Men (ATM) also have their uniforms differents from convicts. But they were not given uniforms," the source said.
The source added, however, that Lawan’s flowing gown, cap, wristwatch, shoes and other personal belongings, like phones and money, were all collected from him and deposited with the welfare unit of the prison.
When the process of his admission was completed, Lawan was seen escorted from the reception/administrative block into the main prison yard.
It was learnt that Lawan was not ushered into the main ATM cell. "He is being kept at the Condemned Criminal Cell (CCC), which is housing both their various jail terms. The CCC is targeted as the VIP section of the prison where we keep important personalities and people we consider to be of good character," it was gathered.
While the main cells contain inmates in their hundreds, the CCC contains only two persons at a time. In addition to that gesture, Lawan and a few other inmates at the CCC have their cells open 24 hours a day.
"Even when we leave their cells open, they cannot go out; they can only come out of the cell to the corridors that are fenced round with iron rods.
"Not every ATM in the prison has a mattress, but we were able to get mattresses for the two of them. The prison authorities provide three square meals for every inmate in this prison. But, I saw people bring food for him from outside. Eating the prison food is optional. He also made provision for bucket, cup and soap for himself," a source said.
Thus, the officials of the prisons have reportedly granted Lawan the privilege of eating the food brought by his family members.
"Prisons authorities do not allow a single person in a cell, be it VIP or ordinary cell, for security reasons. In fact, he has been allocated a room where he will no doubt sleep on a double bunk bed with a fan," the source added.
When the reporter returned to the prison yesterday and had access to the yard, Farouk was seen at one of the CCC cells at a 'V' shaped block leading to the main ATM cell before the convicts' cell.
Though from outside the corridors the reporter could see through Lawan’s room and the water system toilet in it, it was not, however, clear if he was alone in the cell room or sharing it with another inmate.
"Every cell at the CCC has a toilet and as you can see, nobody can use curtains or anything to cover his window or door. They are all made of iron rods so that we can see from here everything happening in the cell. But the inmates cannot use the toilets in their cells as there is not enough water to always flush. They come out of the cells to use the toilets at the corridor," the cell guard said.
Another guard outside the prison yard said that he saw Farouk Lawal join other Muslim convicts to say their afternoon prayer in the mosque built behind his cell room, adding, the laws are relaxed for him. That is what they do to most responsible inmates that 'will not make any attempts to escape'.
The two lawmakers will remain in the prison till February 8, 2013 when the matter would come up for hearing.
